One Second After by William Forstchen
This was truly a thought provoking novel full of sadness and desperation. The thing many of us fear worse happens, war. But not the war you expect. This war was started with a simple nuclear weapon detonated in the atmosphere causing an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). It cast the United States into darkness and sent us back to the pre-electrical age. Imagine no phones, cars, computers, electricity and no refrigeration for your child’s medicine that keeps her alive. This is a story of neighbors doing what they must to survive. John Matherson was a soon to be General but gave it up to care for his sick wife. After she passed he continued in the community of Black Mountain raising his two children, one of which was diabetic. When the pulse hit everything stopped. He had to fight for medicine to keep his daughter alive for the next six months while hoping to get more medicine after that. What happened after that is horrifyingly real. People turned on each other killing and stealing food. A group of people even took to cannibalization and set their eyes on the town of Black Mountain. John Matherson brought the community together to attempt to repel this group. While one part of his heart was being filled again, another part was being ripped out. An emotional roller coaster of what life would be like when everything changes. If you can read this book and not let one tear drop then you are stronger than me. Zach and Ginger are heart wrenching in their love and dedication. And Jen is the strong southern lady that stands tall and understands what must be done while standing beside the ones she loves. Read this book as soon as possible and then pray that it never comes true. --John
